THARAPHITA

In the early 1990s, as the post-Soviet bloc was only just beginning to break free from the grip of occupation, Pagan Black Metal was experiencing its golden age in the Baltic states. These were bands whose worldviews turned towards their native lands’ histories, ancestral heritage, ancient gods, and the epic, majestic sound of northern metal. Among them, Estonia’s THARAPHITA stood out as one of the leading acts and a cornerstone of the regional scene!
From their very first recordings, THARAPHITA enjoyed phenomenal popularity in Lithuania, with the legendary Merekurat becoming something of an anthem for the metal scene. Remarkably, over three decades of existence, the band has not only remained relevant but has also maintained an exceptionally high level of creativity, even if not the most prolific. At its core, their music is epic black metal driven by melody and fast-paced rhythms, marked by intensity and, at times, the raw, unpolished sound of their early period. Their songs are characterised by keyboards that create a profound sense of depth, along with choral, collective vocal passages that frequently emerge from the mix. In their more recent work, the band has not shied away from incorporating elements of heavy metal and other styles, embracing experimentation while preserving the pagan spirit at the heart of THARAPHITA.
Unbelievably, the band has achieved its popularity and recognition while performing almost exclusively in Estonian. At the same time, this is hardly surprising, as in this genre, lyrics are merely an added dimension, complementing the musical fusion with the medieval world that is felt through the heart and soul...
