The Swiss black metal underground has been surprisingly productive in the past decade, delivering mysterious bands and intriguing sound. However, SCHAMMASCH is something extraordinary even among them. Focused on atmosphere, spiritual depths and leaving a memorable impression, the musicians don’t even refer to their art as black metal, defining it as the music between the endless beyond and abyss...
SCHAMMASCH already has a collection five studio albums, each of them bringing the band a step further from traditional black/death sound; their latest work “The Maldoror Chants: Old Ocean“ (2024), released just a few weeks ago, balances between atmospheric black metal, psychedelic rock, and other untraditional genres. Rather melancholic, Schammasch does not burden you with complex virtuosic manoeuvres, but casts a mysterious spell of dark vibe, featuring subtle musical details thus slightly reminiscent of the Greek cult of the Rotting Christ.
Although wearing cloaks and hoods – a frequent choice of stage attire these days, the band members don’t hide their faces under any masks as if to show that their music is modern, open to experiments, most unexpected post elements, and character. They also consider art as one of the few objects that can bring people into a higher level. Heavily influenced by surrealism, SCHAMMASCH keep growing as artists and, naturally, strive to push all musical boundaries.
