KŪLGRINDA

Ritual Folklore | Lithuania

KŪLGRINDA is an invisible, secret, underwater stone path through a swamp or a lake. KŪLGRINDA rite ensemble of Romuva community is taking this path to find the musical treasures of our ancestors.

KŪLGRINDA is a school of singing and rites, promoting our ancient heritage in Lithuania and beyond, performing the rites of marriage, children’s blessing and calendar celebrations, as well as singing and recording song albums, dedicated to the Gods and Goddesses.

KŪLGRINDA was formed thirty years ago. This was the first folk ensemble in Lithuania, wearing archaeological costumes. The songs, recorded by KŪLGRINDA, are used for music textbooks, introducing the Lithuanian singing tradition. In 2018, those songs were used for the Folklore programme of the Lithuanian Song Festival.  The albums released introduce the essential aspects of the ancient Lithuanian music not only to Lithuanian, but also foreign listeners.

For the first time, KŪLGRINDA, the long-time cultivators of Baltic ritualistic folklore, is coming to KILKIM ŽAIBU festival. This is one of those cases where kindred groups have been developing their practices for many years, but were in no hurry to meet, knowing that their paths will eventually cross. Such a historic moment will happen this summer. Join the thunderous midsummer celebration!
