Although residing between Ohio and Pennsylvania, INCANTATION – the legendary four from the United States – are considered a part of the classic New York death metal scene. In more than a third of a century, this band has not only shaped the sound of the genre, typical for their region, but also greatly influenced dozens or even hundreds of death metal bands around the world, with the current and former members directly contributing to the emergence of other well-known formations, such as Profanatica or Mortician.
INCANTATION is a straightforward death metal, characterized by a constant change of rhythm, varying between slow death and doom melancholy, sharpened by black metal interludes, and lashes of a totally brutal force. Low guitar tunes, John McEntee’s extremely rich vocals, and straightforward riffs evade any connections with modernity or excess melodies – these features have shaped the image of INCANTATION over the years and are very easy to recognise from the first chord.
We can safely say that INCANTATION is old school, but absolutely not old-fashioned. More than three decades of unique and relentless pursuit of their own path have built a cult of faithful followers, while their latest album “Unholy Deification“, marked by the devil’s dozen and released in 2023, is a proof that these Americans are as relevant as in the early 1990s.
