Formed in the German state of Baden-Württemberg, FIRTAN has become a strong name on today’s – and tomorrow’s – black metal scene. For more than fifteen years, the band has held a solid position in the German black metal market and is truly a serious force.
The German musicians promote a rather dark but atmospheric sound. While their roots lie in pagan values, today they focus more on abstract, spiritual, and philosophical themes.
The band openly shows its appreciation for the harsh and raw black metal sound of the 1990s. However, FIRTAN’s music offers a wide range of shades within the genre. In their early work, you can hear elements of melodic, Nordic, and depressive black metal. In their latest albums, the songs are much more refined and carefully crafted. Even if you would not label them as progressive, you certainly cannot accuse the band of lacking variety or originality.
While maintaining strong guitar parts, sharp vocals, and a spacious sound, FIRTAN is not afraid to use violin and keyboards, adding more subtlety and a touch of melancholy to their music.
FIRTAN are frequent guests at the biggest heavy music festivals in Germany. They have released four studio albums, each one stronger, more interesting, and more complex than the last. Having gone through almost every stage of the genre’s evolution, FIRTAN searches for a balance between chaos and harmony, expressing both the purpose and the meaninglessness of life.
